Fisheries ecology and biology, biology and fish life strategies, fisheries management and applications in fisheries biology

Research experience:

In the period 1985-1994 he worked from time to time as a collaborating researcher at the National Center of Marine Research (NCTHE, now HCMR). In 1995 he was elected as assistant professor of fish science at the Department of Biology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in 2000 he became Associate Professor and in 2006 he became a professor of fish biology and fisheries biology in the same department. He was the director of the Ichthyology Laboratory (2005-2013). Since November 2013, he is the director of the Hellenic Institute for Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters. He has participated in 27 national and international programs and coordinated 14 research projects. He was a member of the Commission STECF of the European Union (1998-2002), coordinator of the CIESM Aquatic Resources Committee (2001-2004), chairman of the committee Living Resources and Marine Ecosystems of CIESM (2004-2007), and vice president of the FishBase Consortium (2005/2013, 2006/2014). He is a member of the publishing committee of 6 international scientific journals and co-publisher of the international journal Ethics in Science and Environmental Politics. He has written more than 150 publications in jury journals and more than 300 other publications (textbooks, books in books, special publications, and announcements in conferences, press reports, technical reports).
