Proposal 4: FISH AS-HG

Πρόταση 4: FISH AS-HG

Effect of habitat and environment on the quantities and species of arsenic and mercury in fish

When:
April 2022
Where: Straits of Oreoi
What: Experimental bottom and pelagic trawl fishing for collecting benthic and pelagic fish species, as well as collection of water, sediment and zooplankton samples
Who: Environmental and Chemical Processes Laboratory (ECPL), Department of Chemistry, University of Crete

In the “FISH AS-HG” research action (funded by "RePhil"), the R/V PHILIA was utilized to collect demersal and pelagic fish samples using an experimental trawl, as well as to collect water, sediment and zooplankton samples.

The aim of the “FISH AS-HG” cruise was to investigate the factors that affect the presence of different forms of As and Hg in fish species in Greece.

In total, benthic fish (European hake, red mullet, Common pandora), pelagic fish (anchovies), water, particulate matter, sediments and zooplankton were collected.

These samples will be analyzed for metals and for the species of arsenic and mercury in order to meet the aims of the proposal.

The expected results include (1) the speciation of As and Hg in benthic and pelagic fish tissues from Greece, (2) the investigation of the environmental factors that affect the conversion of As and Hg in their various forms in fish tissues, (3) the assessment of the uptake routes of the different forms of metals by fish and (4) the assessment of the risk to humans from the consumption of benthic and pelagic fish from Greece.
